Confusing advice

The most unemotional person I ever knew said

Being emotional may be the most practical thing that you can do.

I never figured that out. Then again, he also said

You shouldn’t believe a single thing I say. Always assume I’m not serious.

How about that statement? Does it count or is it an axiom?
